Aizawl, Sept 12: Hundreds of houses were damaged in floods in Mizoram, where road communication was also disrupted.
At least 600 houses were submerged in the Mizoram - Bangladesh border as the Khawthlangtuipui river breached, sweeping away rice cultivation areas and fish ponds, officials said today.
Floods along the Mizoram-Karimganj district (Assam) border inundated at least 106 houses, with 80 of them completely damaged.
The Tlawng river submerged the Bairabi railway station, the only one in the state.
At least 75,000 acres of rice cultivation, 6,600 areas of Jhum, and 1,230 fish ponds were damaged in the Kolasib district along the Mizoram-Assam border.
The devastation caused by this monsoon in Mizoram has been the worst ever in the state's history, with properties worth crores of rupees damaged by landslides and flood waters, officials said.
They have attributed the reasons for floods in this capital to non-compliant of building norms and lack of drainage and sewerage system.
Some roads linking Aizawl with other district headquarters remained blocked due to massive landslides with BRO and PWD officials engaged in clearance work.
